چکیده

The problem of bound states in effective field theories is studied. A rescaled version of nonrelativistic effective field theory is formulated which makes the velocity power counting of operators manifest. Results obtained using the rescaled theory are compared with known results from NRQCD. The same ideas are then applied to study Yukawa bound states in 1 + 1 and 3 + 1 dimensions, and to analyze when the Yukawa potential can be replaced by a δ-function potential. The implications of these results for the study of nucleon-nucleon scattering in chiral perturbation theory is discussed. Typeset using REVTEX

Effective Field Theory and Matching in Non-Relativistic Gauge Theories

The effective Lagrangian and power counting rules for non-relativistic gauge theories are derived via a systematic expansion in the large c limit. It is shown that the 1/c expansion leads to an effective field theory which incorporates a multipole expansion. Within this theory there is no need for heuristic arguments to determine the scalings of operators. After eliminating c from the lowest or...

Effective field theories for QED bound states: extending Nonrelativistic QED to study retardation effects

Nonrelativistic QED bound states are difficult to study because of the presence of at least three widely different scales: the masses, three-momenta (pi) and kinetic energies (Ki) of the constituents. Nonrelativistic QED (NRQED), an effective field theory developed by Caswell and Lepage, simplifies greatly bound state calculations by eliminating the masses as dynamical scales. As we demonstrate...

NRQCD, Effective Field Theories and Potential Models

The study of the heavy quark–antiquark system is an old topic (see [1] for earlier references). Here we will concentrate on recent developments based on effective field theories. For large enough masses, these systems can be considered to be non-relativistic (NR) and are then characterized by, at least, three widely separated scales: hard (the mass m, of the heavy quarks), soft (the relative mo...

Effective Field Theories from Soft Limits of Scattering Amplitudes.

We derive scalar effective field theories-Lagrangians, symmetries, and all-from on-shell scattering amplitudes constructed purely from Lorentz invariance, factorization, a fixed power counting order in derivatives, and a fixed order at which amplitudes vanish in the soft limit. These constraints leave free parameters in the amplitude which are the coupling constants of well-known theories: Namb...
